Mizzou gives up its lead late to succumb to second-straight loss to Kansas
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Mizzou baseball just couldn't hang on long enough.
The Tigers held a one-run lead over rival Kansas, heading into the eighth inning of Tuesday night's game, but allowed the Jayhawks to put up a two-piece to eventually win the game 6-5. With the win KU, secured the series sweep over MU, after beating the Tigers by six runs in Lawrence on April 29.
Skipper Kerrick Jackson's team found itself in a hole early on in the loss. In the first inning, Kansas' Jackson Hauge sent starter Josh McDevitt's offering over the wall for a three-run homer. It was McDevitt's first start as a Tiger and ended up being pretty short-lived, as he was pulled after 2.0 innings.
Everything went silent at the plate, until the third inning. That's when outfielder Tyler Macon woke up Taylor Stadium with a hard-hit triple down the first baseline. He would later score on a wild pitch to put MU on the scoreboard, at last.
Macon's team managed to carry the momentum he created into the fourth inning, as well. Brock Daniels and Jackson Lovich each hit solo home runs to knot the game up at three runs apiece. Then, in the very next inning, Mizzou took its first lead of the game, courtesy of a Chris Patterson RBI double into left field to make it 4-3 in favor of the Tigers.
After adding another run onto the board in the fifth, Jackson's team led their rivals by two runs. However, the Jayhawks cut their deficit to one run in the sixth and then put the nail in Mizzou's coffin in the eighth, after the Tigers sent in their sixth pitcher of the night. In that inning, Tony Neubeck let the two, game-winning runs come across the plate, which resulted in him being charged with the loss to drop to 0-4 on the season.
Mizzou out-hit Kansas in the loss, 10-7, as eight Tigers managed to tally a hit and four recorded an RBI.
With the loss, MU dropped to 13-35 overall in 2025 and still carry a 0-24 mark in Southeastern Conference action.
Up next - Jackson and his team will head to College Station for a three-game set against Texas A&M. The Tigers and the Aggies will start the series on Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m.
